Inulin

Inulin: A Forgotten Source of Nutrition

With all of the options for nutritious food available to us today, it can be easy to overlook a valuable nutrient that is found in a number of our most common foods. Inulin is a plant polysaccharide that is used by plants to store energy. It is a source of dietary fiber that supports a healthy population of probiotics in the digestive system, yet many people don't know that it is found in a number of everyday foods like garlic and wheat.

Inulin used to be consumed much more abundantly before our diets became centered around meat products. We consume only about 10% of the inulin that our more herbivorous ancestors, who ate large amounts of inulin-rich tubers and roots, probably did. Some foods are abundantly rich in inulin, chicory root being a prime example. This natural form of inulin can be extracted by brewing Ayurvedic Roast, which contains organic chicory as one of its ingredients.

Why Inulin is Good for Your Digestive System

In recent years there has been a great deal of attention placed on the health value of culturing probiotic populations. Probiotics are living microorganisms, such as bacteria, that provide some benefit to the organism they reside in. They are especially beneficial in the intestines, where they improve the microbial balance in the digestive environment. This supports smooth digestive processes. Thus, now foods that have undergone a fermentation process, like yogurt, are often sold with live probiotic cultures added in order to enhance their digestive benefit.

Inulin helps to support and maintain a healthy population of probiotics, or beneficial bacteria, in the digestive system; thus, it is known as a prebiotic. Not surprisingly, this fact has led food producers to add chicory root derived inulin to a number of food products. Yogurt is the prime example of this, but chicory-derived inulin has also been incorporated into baked goods and other foodstuffs as well.

Because inulin acts to increase and support the healthy bacteria in the digestive system, these bacteria also out-compete detrimental bacteria within the intestines. This naturally leads to a reduced ability for bad bacteria to survive. This evidence of natural selection in action makes it difficult for bad, and sometimes toxic, bacteria like E.coli to grow in the intestines.

Inulin's health benefits don't stop with improving digestion. It may improve overall immune function, causing the body to be more resistant to illness and better capable to fight off infection. It also increases the production and absorption of B vitamins, which help keep skin and hair healthy, improve our ability to handle stress, and also boost immune function.

Inulin Can Also Maintain Digestive Regularity

One of the hallmark signs of poor digestive health or some irregularity in your diet is constipation. Inulin has been proven to be effective in making you more regular, and thus has gained popularity as a treatment for constipation. One unfortunate side effect, however, of increasing inulin intake too quickly may be flatulence. This is an easily treatable side effect, though, that usually can be reversed by only gradually increasing intake. It is essentially a result of an imbalance between good and bad gut bacteria, and eventually inulin will even out that imbalance, reducing bad bacteria in the gut.

Inulin not only has all of the health benefits mentioned above, but it also can make it easier for your colon to absorb nutrients and minerals. It can increase calcium absorption by up to 20%. Ayurvedic Roast provides inulin, along with other minerals like potassium. It is an ideal alternative to coffee. Coffee, on the other hand, causes your body to excrete calcium, potassium, and magnesium through urination.

Inulin is growing rapidly in popularity as a surprisingly powerful digestive health aid. Ayurvedic Roast contains natural, chicory-derived inulin in a readily absorbable form. It is a beneficial dietary supplement, whether you're suffering from constipation or just conscious of your digestive health.

The Inside History

I've always loved coffee. The rich taste, the alluring aroma, and all the delicious combinations with yummy things like steamed milk in a cappucinno or with cream and sugar in ice cream. But unfortunately, I had to give it all up.

Why? Well, the more I read about the devasting effects of caffeine on the body, the natural high acidity of coffee, and other bad effects of drinking coffee, the more I became convinced that I had to kick my "habit". I reluctantly resigned myself to a life without the rich taste I had become accostomed to each morning.

But then an idea came. Why give it up, when I can just find a suitable substitute ? Thus became the 3 year quest which culminated in the creation of the Ayurvedic Roast blend.

How To Brew It

Steep like tea or brew like coffee. Any way you do it, you'll be getting a tasty and healthy caffeine-free beverage!

1. Boil It in Pure Water

Add 1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of pure water, and boil about 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink. Straining is optional, as the grounds will be soft and are edible. The longer it boils, the stronger it gets. Serve with milk or cream, or soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.

2. Coffee Drip Machine

This also works well, and produces a deep flavored cup. Use from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Roast per cup (8 ounces) of water.

3. Coffee/Tea Press

Pour boiling water into a coffee/tea press, and add the Roast. Then let sit for 5-10 minutes, depending on the strength desired.

4. Percolator

This is an old-fashioned brewing method, but still one of the best for extracting maximum flavor.

5. Just Pour Hot Water On It!

Pour hot water into a cup containing 1-3 teaspoons (based on desired strength), and let sit for 3-5 minutes. The grounds will get soft, and can be eaten, as they are the barley, rye, and chicory root. Healthy!

This herbal coffee has an earthy, full bouqeut. Nicely aromatic. I've become addicted to it! Drinking this coffee alternative just makes me feel good!

After being told that caffeine was significantly bad for us over 40's, and that decaf had bad effects on cholesterol, I decided to try the herbal coffee route. My wife and I have tried the 'other' herbal coffee and Ayurvedic Roast. We both enjoyed the slightly stronger coffee flavor and definitely less sweet flavor of the Ayurvedic Roast. It smells better out of the bag as well as during the brew process. It was easy to make in our drip coffee maker, and maintained flavor even when cold (yes, I drink cold coffee after hours of sitting around). While I have become hooked on the flavor of coffee, this substitute is sufficient to fool me with its own unique, in a good way, flavor.

  • Shatavari: Possesing many of the benefits of Ashwagandha, it counterbalances its somewhat heating quality with it cooling effect, and augments their mutually beneficial effects on the body.
  • Brahmi: Commonly used in Ayurveda to lessen mental strain and worry*, it also helps increase intelligence and clarity*. In combination with the other 2 herbs, it has a soothing effect on the mind, while maintaining alertness.

The unique synergy of these three treasured organic herbs creates a soothing, uplifting, and strengthening effect on the mind, body, and spirit*.
