Coffee And Heartburn

Does Coffee Cause Heart Burn?

Heartburn is never a pleasant experience. Some people experience heartburn with surprising regularity, while others only suffer this malady occasionally. Regardless, most people who ever experience even an occasional bout of heartburn want to do whatever they can to keep it from recurring. While the solution is fairly simple and obvious for some heartburn sufferers, others have a harder time pinpointing the source of their gastrointestinal discomfort and end up keeping food diaries to try to eliminate the cause. For some, the cause of the heartburn is surprising, and the answer may lie in the morning cup of joe.

The Coffee/Heartburn Connection

Many people are surprised to learn that coffee can cause significant heartburn. There are a few different reasons why coffee may be the culprit behind the painful or burning sensation, but in order to understand how this happens, it helps to understand what heartburn is.

What Is Heartburn?

Heartburn is a generic term for a variety of gastrointestinal discomforts. It can be as complicated as Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease-also known as GERD. It can simply be a case of indigestion, or sour stomach. Regardless, the cause is typically the same: stomach acid backs up into the esophagus causing the condition we generically refer to as heartburn. It is sometimes difficult to pinpoint heartburn as the cause of the pain-particularly if a person has never experienced heartburn before. Thus, it is sometimes mistaken for heart problems, thus the name "heartburn". Because there are so few nerves in the chest and stomach area, pain is often generalized in the area of the esophagus. This frequently includes the heart and the upper stomach, and often results in some vague symptom descriptions. Most symptoms, however, can be described as tightness, heaviness, burning, pressure, or discomfort in the upper abdominal, chest, and throat areas.

How Does Coffee Cause Heartburn?

There are several components of coffee which can result in heartburn. The first is the caffeine. Caffeine is a vasodilator. This means that it helps to relax your blood vessels. This may sound good, in that it would seemingly help to increase blood flow, and it is in some ways. Increased blood flow is what lends to the "caffeine jolt" many people experience after consuming caffeine. However, this relaxing of the blood vessels also means that certain muscles will relax, as well. Among them, the muscle at the bottom of the esophagus which prevents food and stomach acid from backing up into the throat can become relaxed. This results in the leakage of stomach acid back up into the esophagus and causing heartburn.

There is another reason why coffee causes heartburn, and it has to do with the acidity of coffee. Acidic foods are frequent causes of heartburn because it increases the acidity of the stomach acid. More acid added to an already acidic environment will often result in the unpleasant symptoms of heartburn. Coffee is loaded with tannic acid, which has shown to be a provoker of frequent heartburn symptoms.

Another reason why the morning coffee ritual may be causing heartburn is a bit more subtle than some of the other reasons. It is often the result of dehydration. Coffee is a diuretic, which means that it will flush water from your cells. While on the surface, this may seem to be a good thing, it can actually lead to dehydration. One of the first signs of dehydration is known as dyspeptic pain-this can range from heartburn to GERD symptoms. Our stomachs are filled with hydrochloric acid, and before this acid can be dropped into the small intestine to begin digestion, it needs to be neutralized by adding large amounts of water. When there is not sufficient water available to properly engage in digestion, food will remain in the stomach for longer periods of time. The result, then, is a buildup of stomach acid which cannot go down into the small intestine without being properly diluted-instead, it has nowhere to go but up. The result is often heartburn.

While many people swear they cannot live without their coffee, they might be surprised by the problems it can cause. The morning ritual of sipping a steaming cup of Columbian Roast may just be behind the constant heartburn many people suffer from. There are a number of reasons why coffee can contribute to this sometimes chronic problem in patients: among them, the vasodilator effects, the tannic acid, and dehydration. All three of these contribute to causing heartburn, even in some of the most heartburn resistant people.

The Inside History

I've always loved coffee. The rich taste, the alluring aroma, and all the delicious combinations with yummy things like steamed milk in a cappucinno or with cream and sugar in ice cream. But unfortunately, I had to give it all up.

Why? Well, the more I read about the devasting effects of caffeine on the body, the natural high acidity of coffee, and other bad effects of drinking coffee, the more I became convinced that I had to kick my "habit". I reluctantly resigned myself to a life without the rich taste I had become accostomed to each morning.

But then an idea came. Why give it up, when I can just find a suitable substitute ? Thus became the 3 year quest which culminated in the creation of the Ayurvedic Roast blend.

How To Brew It

Steep like tea or brew like coffee. Any way you do it, you'll be getting a tasty and healthy caffeine-free beverage!

1. Boil It in Pure Water

Add 1 tablespoon for every 1 cup of pure water, and boil about 5-10 minutes. Strain and drink. Straining is optional, as the grounds will be soft and are edible. The longer it boils, the stronger it gets. Serve with milk or cream, or soymilk, rice milk, almond milk, or coconut milk.

2. Coffee Drip Machine

This also works well, and produces a deep flavored cup. Use from 1 teaspoon to 1 tablespoon of Roast per cup (8 ounces) of water.

3. Coffee/Tea Press

Pour boiling water into a coffee/tea press, and add the Roast. Then let sit for 5-10 minutes, depending on the strength desired.

4. Percolator

This is an old-fashioned brewing method, but still one of the best for extracting maximum flavor.

5. Just Pour Hot Water On It!

Pour hot water into a cup containing 1-3 teaspoons (based on desired strength), and let sit for 3-5 minutes. The grounds will get soft, and can be eaten, as they are the barley, rye, and chicory root. Healthy!

After being told that caffeine was significantly bad for us over 40's, and that decaf had bad effects on cholesterol, I decided to try the herbal coffee route. My wife and I have tried the 'other' herbal coffee and Ayurvedic Roast. We both enjoyed the slightly stronger coffee flavor and definitely less sweet flavor of the Ayurvedic Roast. It smells better out of the bag as well as during the brew process. It was easy to make in our drip coffee maker, and maintained flavor even when cold (yes, I drink cold coffee after hours of sitting around). While I have become hooked on the flavor of coffee, this substitute is sufficient to fool me with its own unique, in a good way, flavor.
